The secret to getting more done every day.

One challenge I've seen many people have is designating time to focus on their finances. True wellness centers on Financial, Physical, Mental, Spiritual, and Social; however, with today's busy schedules, how do you fit it all in? Author Stephen Covey says we must put First Things First. He explains this using the Big Rock Theory. Try this,

  1. Take an empty jar. Fill it with dirt and gravel. This represents work, family, duties, chores, texts, emails, social media, TV, etc.

  2. Now squeeze in some Big Rocks. These are your Finances, Exercising, Spiritual practice, etc.

  3. Count how many Big Rocks fit into the jar.

Empty the jar

  1. This time, fill the jar to the top with Big Rocks. Again, these represent your wellness areas listed above.

  2. Once full, pour gravel, sand, and top with water into the jar. These represent the other things you do throughout the day.

  3. Count the number of Big Rocks that fit into the jar by putting them in first.

  4. Notice that even though you filled the jar with the Big Rocks first, there was still room for gravel, sand, and water.

This exercise demonstrates, that if you want to get the big things in life done, you have to do them first. You will still have time for the other pieces of your life. In fact, in most cases, you will start to lose interest in a lot of the things that are keeping you busy today.

As always, here's to your financial success.
