Tips for Families to Save Money This Fall

Fall is such a great time of year. Families come together to enjoy fall festivals, apple picking, and the beautiful fall foliage. But fall is also a time when spending starts to increase. From Halloween to Thanksgiving to Christmas and New Year's, it's easy to spend more than you intended. Here are some tips to help you rein in your spending and still have fun this fall.

  • When buying gifts, a gift card can help you stick to your budget. Choose a gift card and load it with a specific amount. This becomes your spending allowance and will help you avoid overspending.

  • Decrease "spur of the moment" spending by researching Free Things To Do In My Area, put them on your calendar ahead of time, and when you find yourselves looking for something to do, you have great options right on your calendar.

  • Drive to new neighborhoods and enjoy the Halloween and Holiday decorations.

  • Use items you have to make Halloween costumes or buy from thrift and dollar stores.

  • Pack your favorite family snack and explore a new park, hiking trail, or waterfall.

  • It's been a year and we can forget seasonal items we purchased. Before you buy something, check to see if you already have it.

  • Planning your meals ahead of time will help you stay within your budget. Keep your meals simple and don't prepare or order too much food.

  • Seasonal deals are coming out.  Look for coupons and shop early.

  • Make meals around in-season produce and cook in bulk, freezing leftovers for another time.

  • Eat less meat or have Meatless Mondays for the rest of the year. This will help you save money and eat healthier.

  • Limit present buying and focus more on fun activities. This will help you save money and enjoy the holidays more.

  • Start saving for the holidays now.

It's never too early to start saving for the holidays. If you didn't start in January, now is the time! Putting money aside will help you control your spending and avoid going into debt. It is especially great if you have a certain item or activity in mind, and it is an ideal habit to teach kids. Specifically, I recommend an account that has no fees, no minimum balance requirements, and a competitive interest rate.
